Cystatin C, Alias Post-y-Globulin: A Marker for Multiple Sclerosis?

چکیده

Cystatin C, alias post-y-globulin or -trace protein, has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of cysteine proteinases; this protein is normally present in different biological fluids, but particularly so in cerebrospinal fluid. The concentration of cystatin C was determined by radial immunodiffusion in cerebrospinal fluid from patients affected with multiple sclerosis, patients affected* with various neurological diseases and in controls; it was also determined in brain tissue from 2 patients affected with multiple sclerosis and 3 control brains. Cystatin C cerebrospinal fluid levels were undetectable or depressed in many multiple sclerosis cases and the median value differed significantly from the control one. Its low concentration in multiple sclerosis suggests that the regulation of cysteine proteinases is impaired in this disease; hence enhanced activity of cysteine proteinases could initiate, or increase the breakdown of myelin.

بررسی سطح سرمی و ادراری سیستاتین C و ارتباط آن‌ها با مقیاس سنجش میزان ناتوانی بیماران مبتلا به اسکلروز متعدد

Background: Diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), as a major cause of neurological disability in young adults, is difficult to establish, especially at the onset of the disease process, due to lack of reliable molecular markers. The goal of the present study was to evaluate serum and urinary concentrations of cystatin C and to find their relationship with patients' expanded disability status sca...

بررسی مقایسه‌ای ارزش تشخیصی سیستاتین C و کراتینین سرمی در ارزیابی عملکرد کلیه پیوندی در بیماران گیرنده کلیه در دوران اولیه پس از پیوند

Background &Aim: Early detection of decreasing glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is critical to prevent graft rejection in post-transplantation period. Serum creatinine has several drawbacks as a marker of GFR, so serum cystatin C has been proposed as an alternative GFR marker. Thus, we prospectively evaluated the diagnostic value of cystatin C measurements compared with serum creatinine in t...

Comparison of Serum Cystatin C and Creati-nine Levels to Evaluate Early Renal Function after Kidney Transplantation

Background: Accurate and rapid assessment of allograft function is essential in renal transplant recipients in order to detect allograft rejection and to monitor drug nephrotoxicity. We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of cystatin C as a marker of kidney allograft function in the early post-transplant period and to compare this value with that of conventional serum creatinine concentration. Met...

SERUM CYSTATIN C AS A NEW MARKER OF GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE (GFR)

Cystatin C is a 13 KD basic protein that is a member of the cystatin superfamily of cysteine protease inhibitors. The cystatin C gene seems to be a house keeping gene, which is compatible with a stable production rate of cystatin C by most cells. This protein is freely filtered through the glomerulus and almost completely reabsorbed and catabolized by proximal tubular cells. Because of the...

Comparative Assessment of Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) and Cystatin C as Early Biomarkers for Early Detection of Renal Failure in Patients with Hypertension

Background: Hypertension is one the most common causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD). One of the major concerns in hypertensive patients is early detection of renal disorders. In the past, serum creatinine (Scr) concentration was used as a marker of kidney function, but it proffers a late reflection of reduced glomerular filtration rate. Cystatin C and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocal...
